The Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site recently learned about an exciting, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and is seeking assistance from the community so that we may take advantage of it.

An outstanding collection of memorabilia from Buffalo's 1901 Pan-American Exposition -- painstakingly acquired and preserved over a lifetime by a private collector -- is going up for sale.  The TR Site has been granted a limited window in which to purchase items from this remarkable collection at fair market value, without the risk of being outbid at auction.

After careful consideration and review, we have identified approximately thirty (30) items that would meaningfully enhance the TR Site's existing Pan-American Exposition collection and provide exciting opportunities for future programming and exhibitions.  Among the pieces we would like to acquire is a souvenir bell, designed for the Pan-American Exposition and made out of "brass...recovered from the wreck of the [battleship] Maine".  Given that the ensuing Spanish-American War helped propel Theodore Roosevelt into the national spotlight and, ultimately, the presidency, this would be a valuable addition to the TR Site's collection.

The fair market value of the thirty items that the TR Site would like to purchase has been set at one thousand dollars.  If we are able to raise that amount before August 1st, those objects will find a permanent home at the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site, where they will be preserved for the benefit of the public and shared with future generations of students, visitors and historians.
